Before you start
Fibers go on last, onto hair that already looks the way you want it. Wash and dry the hair completely, then style it as usual: blow-dry, straighten or curl, and add any cream you normally use. Heat styling comes before the fibers, and any hairspray after them. For styling habits that add fullness on their own, see how to make thin hair look thicker.
Have the right shade ready (our guide to choosing your Toppik color covers matching), a mirror, and a hand mirror or a phone camera for the crown. Apply over a sink or before getting dressed, so any fibers that miss the hair are easy to brush away.
Step by step
The core routine has five steps, the same for men and women, short hair or long.
- Make sure the hair is completely dry and styled the way it will be worn.
- Open the bottle and hold it upright over the thinning area. Shake or tap it gently so the fibers fall onto the hair, a little at a time.
- Look in the mirror. Where scalp still shows, add a little more. Building up in light layers looks more natural than one heavy shake.
- Pat the area gently with your fingertips, so the fibers settle among the hairs and cling to them. Comb or style lightly afterwards if needed.
- Finish with a light mist of FiberHold Spray over the area. It strengthens the bond between fibers and hair, for longer-lasting results and a little extra shine.
The part and the crown
For a wider part, comb the part where it is normally worn, then shake the fibers along the line from front to back. Pat, then let the hair fall back into place. A part looks most natural when the fibers sit on the hair either side of the line, not piled up in the middle.
The crown is harder because you can't see it. Use a hand mirror with your back to the main mirror, or take a photo from above, which is the angle most people see it from anyway. Shake the fibers over the center of the swirl, pat outward in the direction the hair grows, and check again.
The hairline: build it softly
The hairline is where the eye looks first, so it rewards patience. A real hairline is never a hard line: it is slightly uneven and thinner at the very edge.
- Apply a little just behind the hairline rather than onto the forehead, then pat it forward with a fingertip.
- Use short, light shakes. Fibers have nothing to hold on to on bare skin, so any that land on the forehead will show.
- Wipe stray fibers off the skin with a dry tissue before setting with FiberHold Spray.
- Leave the very front slightly lighter than the area behind it. A soft edge reads as natural.
Wind, rain and a long day
Once applied, the fibers stay in place until the next wash and are made to resist wind, rain and perspiration. FiberHold Spray strengthens that bond, which is worth having on the days that ask the most of a hairstyle: a windy afternoon in the hills around Amman, a summer day outdoors, or a wedding where the dabke goes on for hours after the photos.
Avoid rubbing the area with a hand or a towel, and keep a small mirror for a quick check before an occasion. Swimming isn't on the list of things the fibers are made to resist, so count a swim as a wash and apply fresh fibers afterwards.
Washing the fibers out
Fibers wash out with your usual shampoo; nothing special is needed. Rinse well, especially at the crown and along the part, then dry, style and apply fresh fibers. Since they last until the next wash, every wash is a fresh start.
Toppik is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, and stop using it if irritation or a rash appears.
Start with fibers in a shade that matches the roots and FiberHold Spray to set them; the 12 g size is an easy first step. Toppik is also sold at pharmacies across Jordan: see where to find Toppik.
Questions
Do you apply Toppik on wet or dry hair?
On dry hair. Wash, dry and style first, including any heat styling, then apply the fibers and finish with FiberHold Spray. That is the order Toppik's own directions give.
Do I need FiberHold Spray with Toppik fibers?
The fibers hold on their own until the next wash and resist wind, rain and perspiration. FiberHold Spray strengthens the bond between fibers and hair, for longer-lasting results and a little extra shine. Use it every day, or keep it for long days and occasions.
Will Toppik come off in the rain?
The fibers are made to resist wind, rain and perspiration, and a light mist of FiberHold Spray adds to that hold. Swimming is different: count a swim as a wash, and apply fresh fibers afterwards.
How do you remove Toppik hair fibers?
With shampoo. The fibers stay in place until the next wash and come out with it, so a normal wash and a thorough rinse is all it takes.
Can Toppik be used on a beard?
Yes. The fibers can be used on the beard as well as the hairline, part, crown and roots. Match the shade to the beard itself, which is often a different color from the hair on the head, and apply it the same way.
